The Joint Structure Plan Nature Conservation Policy N1 states, with regard to International Sites and Species : "Development which may adversely affect a..site which is not connected with, or necessary to the management of the site, will not be permitted unless it can be demonstrated that there are imperative reasons of overriding public interest for the development and there is no alternative solution.."

The international SSSI and SAC of Ford Moss is just 250m from the nearest turbine and 2 others would also be sited in extremely close proximity..


Ford Moss is a largely intact 46 hectare bog in undulating topography in the rain-shadow of the Cheviot Hills. Although partially drained, the re-wetted surface contains many waterlogged areas with species typical of peat-formation. Thus, although there are drier purple moor-grass Molinia caerulea-dominated parts, it is considered to be predominantly active raised bog. There is a 12 m depth of peat within the confining basin. The vegetation includes species of raised bog as well as poor-fen, which is also indicated in places by the presence of white sedge Carex curta where water runs into the bog from the surrounding slopes.
